Great research deserves a great presentation. Learn in this workshop how to present with clarity, confidence, and authority—and how to handle questions like a pro. We practice structuring the presentation, creating attention-getting introductions and powerful conclusions, speaking and moving with authority, successful networking and more.

Content:

This workshop focuses on how scholars can best convey the value and significance of their work through oral communication, emphasizing not only typical structures of thought and expressions in English, but also an audience’s expectations. The focus of the workshop is on the formal conference panel presentation and the question-and-answer session. It also includes sections on the presentation structure, take-home messages, attention-getting openers, and linguistic cues for the audience (signposting language). The workshop also supplies tips about how to best prepare and implement a successful networking strategy at conferences to aid in career development.

 

 

Goals:

After successful participation in the workshop, participants will have

  • learned the “golden rules” of presenting in English
  • created an attention-getting opener and strong conclusion for their presentation
  • practiced a concise yet captivating introduction of themselves and their research
  • learned how to develop a relaxed and personable, yet professional style with which they may better engage their listeners and communicate their ideas
  • practiced short presentations of their research
  • discussed how to defend their research results during a question-and-answer practice session
  • learned special tips for delivering outstanding presentations on-line

Dr. Carrie Dohe:
Dr. Carrie B. Dohe has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in the Comparative Studies of Religions. She has gotten top funding (DAAD, German Research Foundation), two coveted postdoctoral positions (Universities of Marburg and Toronto), and two book contracts with the leading scientific publishing house Routledge (Jung’s Wandering Archetype: Race, Religion and Analytical Psychology, 2016; The Greenings of Religions: Unlocking the Potential of Religions for Nature Conservation, forthcoming). Moreover, she has taught over 100 workshops for doctoral students from around the world studying at universities throughout Germany, Switzerland and Austria
